David and I just got back from 5 days in Hawaii. By ourselves. It was our Uh-oh-once-#2-is-here-we're-not-going-to-get-so-much-free-babysitting from-safta-&-grandpa so-we-might-as-well-enjoy-ourselves-while-we-can vacation.
We took a bunch of pictures. My favorites are the ones of the Luau with the fire dancer:
There was also this super cute kid on stage while they were teaching people the Hula, who looked up adoringly at the dancer and did everything she did:
As is normal for these trips, since I hate being in front of the camera and I get lazy and let David do most of the behind-the-camera work, there are a whopping two pictures of me, including one where I'm not even facing the camera. But hey, I'm 4 months pregnant and don't hate the pictures, so that's not bad. We also watched some surfers tackle some really lame waves:
And even with those wimpy ones, they still wiped out, but fortunately some weird strangers with long lenses (i.e. us) were there to capture their moments of triumph:
On a side note, I really don't like it when non-natives try to pronounce things using a native accent. Logically, it seems like it would be a good thing to try and pronounce things "proper", as if you're showing proper respect. But it just comes out sounding forced and lame. The chef at the Teppan Yaki is allowed to say "Lah-nai-EE" since that's where his family lives, but when the fat white dude from Ohio says it, it just sounds wrong. It's "Huh-why", dude. Not "huh-why-ee". Not for you. It's "orderves", not "orrhhh d'(pause)euuurvvhee". I work with a guy named "Vivek"... it's really pronounced "viv ACHE", but I just don't call him that (unless I want to goad him, of course). There was a great SNL skit about this once, I can't find a transcript, but I'm not the only person who loves it. And someone else even got all intellectual about it.

Can I admit somthing? However you want to pronounce it, I am sitting here in a puddle of jealousy that you got to have a grown-ups trip to the big tropical island of love.

We were lucky, my husband's parents live close by, and we got a great offer from one of those "Sit in our timeshare meeting for 90 minutes and we'll give you a great hotel rate" dealios... and then we didn't have to do the timeshare meeting after all!
